Science Olympiad Club
“Science Olympiad competitions are like academic track meets, consisting of a series of 23 team events in each division. By combining events from all disciplines, Science Olympiad encourages a wide cross-section of students to get involved.” (www.soinc.org)
Students in TKA’s Science Olympiad club spend the first half of the year preparing their selected events for the regional competition held in February. Some events include “build-aheads” such as towers, computer programming, programming vehicles or a Rube-Goldberg device. Other events involve experimental design and performing labs at the competition. The remaining events test scientific knowledge, assimilation of facts, and logic. Students in the club spend a minimum of one hour per week working on their selected event under four mentor teachers.
In 2016, our inaugural team qualified for the state competition. This year, we are taking 3 teams to regionals at the University of Miami and hope to once more qualify for states held at the University of Central Florida. The ultimate goal is to qualify for the 2018 national competition at Colorado State University!
